| #Writing Robot: From small ideas to highly applicable solutions in learning and life
#When the problem of note-taking is solved by technology, from the innovative thinking of young people #Practical – applied – humane thinking #The subject project “Systems design thinking” is one of the ways UEH integrates the Glo-cal educational style into the classroom |
In an era where technology is increasingly intertwined with daily life, highly applicable innovations from students not only reflect academic competence but also demonstrate a human-centric technological mindset – technology for humanity. At UEH, this is realized through practical learning products, exemplified by the writing robot model directly designed and fabricated by student Le Huy, majoring in Intelligent Control and Automation at the Institute of Intelligent and Interactive Technologies, UEH.
From Real-World Needs to Technological Solutions
The product was born from a very ordinary situation: the daily need to take lecture notes. Driven by the desire to automate repetitive tasks and leveraging experience from previous research projects, the student developed a robot capable of writing and drawing on paper – fully automated and software-controlled.
Instead of utilizing complex and costly electromechanical systems, the robot was designed with cost optimization in mind while still ensuring precision and stability. The frame uses lightweight, easily machined aluminum; the drive system operates via belts and rollers instead of traditional linear rails. With the ESP32 microcontroller as its central processor, the robot can flexibly process control commands and operate reliably over extended periods.
Technical Design Focused on Practical Application
The robot operates within a workspace of approximately 290×220 mm – larger than an A4 sheet – enabling tasks such as writing, signing, sketching technical diagrams, and drawing geometric shapes. Stepper motors are employed to ensure high precision when moving along the X-Y axes. The entire operation is programmed through custom software developed by the student.
This is not merely an experimental product within the scope of an academic assignment; it has reached a level of completion sufficient for practical application in learning, supporting students, or expanding its potential uses in areas such as technical drafting, small-scale production, or as a personal assistive device.
Technology for Humanity: The Core Mindset in UEH’s Training
With a multidisciplinary and practice-oriented training approach, UEH not only equips students with specialized knowledge but also fosters their problem-solving abilities—placing people and real-world needs at the center. Products like the writing robot are concrete evidence of this educational approach: connecting theory with action, combining technology with humanity.
Beyond addressing a specific learning need, the robot model provides students with opportunities to hone technical thinking, system analysis, design, and improvement skills, as well as to engage with technological trends in automation and IoT. These are precisely the competencies highly sought after in the digital age labor market.
A Space for Technological Innovation at UEH
At the Institute of Intelligent and Interactive Technologies (UEH), students study in an environment that integrates theory, applied research, and real-world projects. Activities such as Project-Based Learning, student scientific research, and corporate partnerships help shape innovative thinking, self-directed learning, and the proactive implementation of technology products from an early stage.
Every student product – whether arising from personal needs or academic ideas – is regarded by UEH as part of the process of training global citizens, innovative learners, and future experts in emerging technology fields.
UEH – Nurturing Technological Solutions
The writing robot is a prime example of the spirit of learning intertwined with innovation at UEH – where technology serves not only technical advancement but also human benefit. The mindset of “technology for humanity” is expressed not only through products but also as a guiding principle for the learning and development journey of UEH students in the era of globalization and artificial intelligence.
With an international-standard training orientation, UEH is currently implementing advanced programs in technology fields:
- Robotics and Artificial Intelligence: Focuses on developing intelligent solutions based on AI, machine learning, and robotics. Students gain exposure from control programming and machine learning to automated system integration.
- Logistics Technology: Integrates knowledge of supply chains, smart operations, and digital technology to address logistics challenges in a global environment.
- Intelligent Control and Automation: Applies principles of digital control, sensors, IoT, and systems engineering to build automated solutions for production and daily life.
- Data Analytics: Concentrates on data mining, visualization, and decision-making based on big data, combining programming skills and quantitative thinking.
Beyond providing specialized knowledge, the programs at the Institute of Intelligent and Interactive Technologies, UEH, are designed with an interdisciplinary orientation, combining engineering, technology, economics, and management to foster comprehensive thinking, adaptability, and the ability to solve complex problems. Students participate in Project-Based Learning, scientific research, practical internships, and corporate collaborations from their very first year.
