[Research Contribution] Gen Z Understanding of Themselves – 6 Concerns When Choosing a Career in the Super Smart Era 5.0 – Part 2
7 July, 2025
The remarkable development of AI and information technology has a significant impact on today’s labor market, especially on the career choices of the younger generation. As a Gen Z in the 5.0 era, understanding yourself to choose the right field and career is an important key to opening the door to a sustainable future. In part 2 of the Live talk “Gen Z understanding of themselves: 6 concerns when choosing a career in the 5.0 super-intelligent era”, the experts continue to accompany parents and students to learn about personality testing tools and how to use AI effectively as well as how to understand personal emotions in the journey of choosing a major and career.
Live Talk has the participation of speakers and leading experts in the field of career orientation and labor market: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Trinh Thuy Anh – Vice Rector of UEH College of Technology and Design, and Dr. Ly Thi Mai – Psychological consultant and MC Tuyen Tang.
AI and the “Understanding You” tool – a solution to discover and understand yourself
MC Tuyen Tang: With the rapid changes of the times and society, there have been many tools to support and suggest career orientation for students such as the Personality Test (MBTI), the Career Test (Holland), or AI Career Matching. Recently, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City has also developed a tool called “Understanding You“, accompanying the young generation on their journey to find a suitable career. To better visualize, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thuy Anh, can you share more about the ideas and operating mechanism of the “Understanding You” tool – a solution to support students in the process of self-discovery and career orientation?
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Trinh Thuy Anh: The mission University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City is not only to provide high-quality human resources but also to contribute to society, bring value to the community, and aim for sustainable development according to the trend of the times. Understanding the worries and concerns of young people when facing an important threshold, UEH has launched the tool “Understanding You” – a software that combines personality testing and career testing methods, helping students have a clearer view of their career development orientation. To use this software, you can visit the website https://hieuveban.ueh.edu.vn/ of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City or search for the keyword “Understanding You” on the search toolbar of Zalo. This tool gives suggestions about industries, careers, or fields that match your personality and desires after taking very simple and interesting tests. This is an important stepping stone to help you succeed and shine more in the future.
Psychologist, Dr. Ly Thi Mai added: The most important thing when making a decision is a feeling of peace. Among many choices, if students feel more secure and comfortable when choosing a major or career, it is also a manifestation of “Understanding yourself”. Parents should remember that the center of learning is the child, not themselves or their life’s dream.
We are enjoying the fruits of human creation. These fruits, especially in the field of intellectual development, can become tools to serve life for students to understand themselves and bring many good things. However, we should also use these tools selectively and not abuse them.
Emotions when choosing a career for the young generation – Pressure or motivation?
MC Tuyen Tang: The keyword associated with the sharing of Prof. Thuy Anh and Dr. Mai is “emotion”. If young people feel secure and confident in their choices, the path to university will become easier. However, young people should also learn about other aspects of emotions to be ready for the constant changes of the times. So, how should students prepare mentally when making important decisions?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Thuy Anh: Personally, Thuy Anh used to be a model of the saying “Where parents put, children sit there”. At first, Thuy Anh did not love this profession much, but the more she worked, the more she strived and devoted herself, the “fire of the profession” began to burn. If you are still struggling to find your own interests or passions, not knowing your abilities, why don’t you try to experience to know if you “love the profession enough” or if you are suitable for that industry or profession? On the journey of self-development, each person’s will plays a dominant role, and success will come from perseverance, discipline, responsibility, and dedication. Failure gives us lessons to be more successful. No one can be right from the start. As long as you believe in yourself, practice positive thinking, and keep a happy mentality, failure means opening a new path to success.
Parents’ tolerance when accompanying their children on their career journey and the story of failure at the university threshold
Psychologist, Dr. Ly Thi Mai: Even though there are support tools, anyone can make the wrong decision. However, there are still people who love adventure, dare to do, dare to try – and this is called the courage to live. This can lead to failure or success. The tolerance and acceptance of change by parents and the responsibility and courage of these people when making a decision are also aspects worth considering and referring to. Everyone has a journey to develop. When professions are developed in a balanced way, it is a sustainable society. Whether you are a college student or a vocational school student, the most important thing is what you have contributed to the community and society after graduation.
The live talk ended with the first keyword in the three Understandings – “Understanding yourself” being decoded. This is not only the first step, but also the companionship of parents on the journey of development with their children. In the context of constant change, listening, observing, and understanding yourself to adapt to the trends of the times is the key factor in choosing a suitable career for yourself in the future.
