In the morning of May 12, 2022, The Honorary Doctor Conferment, Honorary Rector Appointment Ceremony Of UEH College Of Technology And Design (CTD) For Dr. Park Young June – Former Vice Minister of Ministry of Knowledge Economy, The Republic of Korea and School of Media Design’s Launching Event – “Transforming for Sustainability” was organized by the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City. The event was an important milestone for CTD in implementing the strategic plans for the period 2021 – 2025 with a vision to 2030. On this occasion, UEH also arranged high-level official meetings and a workshop with partners in the region to enhance domestic and international cooperation in the fields of technology, design, and communication.

At the event, UEH was honored to welcome Dr. Park Young June – Former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, The Republic of Korea. On the UEH’ side, there were the presence of: Prof. Nguyen Dong Phong – Chairman of UEH University Council; Prof. Su Dinh Thanh – President of UEH University; Dr. Bui Quang Hung – Vice President of UEH University, Acting Rector of UEH College of Technology and Design; Assoc. Prof. Phan Thi Bich Nguyet – Chairwoman of UEH Strategies and Policies Consulting Council; together with leaders of UEH Member Colleges, Vinh Long Campus, leaders of Schools and Departments. The event also welcomed the presence of distinguished UEH alumni who were leaders of domestic and foreign corporations and companies to attend and sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UEH. The event got the attention of Vietnamese and Korean corporations, companies, and media agencies.

With the restructuring strategy, positioning UEH to become a Multidisciplinary and Sustainable University with a high reputation in the region and the world, UEH has promoted a lot of international cooperation activities, built mechanisms to attract high-quality foreign human resources to work at UEH. In particular, UEH College of Technology and Design (UEH-CTD) in its first year of operation has made many breakthroughs in attracting international leaders and experts and implementing new educational programs in the field of technology and design in line with international standards, as well as research and consulting activities closely associated with the community and sustainable development. Speaking at the event, Prof. Nguyen Dong Phong – Chairman of UEH University Council stated: “UEH-CTD will carry out the mission of transforming education and research activities based on technology and design for a sustainable society through an innovative practical learning environment and artistic inspiration for learners and the community, aiming for sustainability. Today, to mark one of CTD’s important milestones, UEH is honored to organize The Honorary Doctor Conferment, Honorary Rector Appointment Ceremony of UEH-CTD for Dr. Park Young June and the launch of School of Media Design. These are the two opening activities for a series of events under the theme “Transforming for Sustainability” which includes official meetings, workshop, and MoU signing, marking an integration in the network of experts and prestigious organizations in the region.”

Dr. Bui Quang Hung – Vice President of UEH University, Acting Rector of UEH-CTD introduced UEH-CTD’ strategies with the theme “Transforming for Sustainability” under the 5 pillars of Training, Scientific Research, International Cooperation, Social Impact, and Operations Management Strategies. By 2030, UEH-CTD is oriented to become a leading educational, research and consulting institution on design and technology application in design, planning, management and administration in Vietnam and with a high reputation in Southeast Asia.

In the process of implementing these strategies, UEH in general and UEH-CTD were honored to have the strategic advice from Dr. Park Young June – Former Vice Minister of Ministry of Knowledge Economy, The Republic of Korea – on scientific and educational activities and connecting international partners and resources to implement the multidisciplinary and sustainable university strategy. To show UEH’s appreciation towards his contributions as well as to promote his role, prestige and affection for UEH, UEH University Council and the President of UEH decided to confer the title of Honorary Doctor on Dr. Park Young June and invite him to be the Honorary Rector of UEH College of Technology and Design.

Dr. Park Young June conducted his doctoral research on Vietnam at Hanyang University – The Republic of Korea. He has more than 30 years of experience working in the public sector, holding important positions in Korean government such as: Vice Minister of Knowledge Economy Ministry of The Republic of Korea (formerly known as Korea’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy), Deputy Chief of the Cabinet Office of Korean government… as well as consulting for Korean corporations: Senior Advisor of the Federation of Korean Industries – International Management Institute (FKI-IMI), Chairman of JM Robotics Company, etc. Through his connection, UEH has expanded long-term cooperation with many organizations and individuals in Korea, implemented the Korea – Vietnam Advanced Management (KVAM) high-level training program for Vietnamese enterprises to successfully integrate with the world. UEH also once had the honor to welcome distinguished guests coming to share their experience, such as: Dr. Chung Un-Chan – Former Prime Minister of The Republic of Korea, Former President of Seoul National University; Dr. Lee Ju-ho – President of ASIA Education Association, Former Minister of Ministry of Education, The Republic of Korea; Prof. Park Sang-Woo – Former Vice Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Ministry, The Republic of Korea.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Park Young June – Honorary Rector of UEH-CTD shared: “I am extremely proud to receive this prestigious Honorary doctorate degree from UEH – one of the best universities in Vietnam and is making a powerful impression to the world. Moreover, I am honored to be appointed as Honorary Rector of UEH-CTD, which will surely become a place to nurture future talents in Vietnam. The year of 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Korea and I believe that UEH will achieve its great mission with its restructuring strategy to become a Multidisciplinary and Sustainable University sooner by making cooperations with Korea. And now is also the time to strengthen our trust and overcome global challenges together.”

Also in the roadmap for implementing strategic plans, UEH-CTD officially launched the School of Media Design (SMD), introduced the School’s Board of Management and the Digital Communication and Multimedia Design Program. At SMD, learners will be trained to become media experts/managers who are capable of working in a global environment and proactively adapting to globalization, aiming for the following values: creativity, artistic inspiration , integrating many new fields of knowledge to keep up with the sustainable development of the world. SMD’s educational programs are built according to international standards, application-oriented and integrated interdisciplinary knowledge to promote learners’ capacity development with a team of prestigious highly-experienced professional instructors in the field of communication and design in the country and abroad. UEH has also appointed Assoc. Prof. Trinh Thuy Anh to hold the position of Dean of School of Media Design and invited Dr. Yi Dong Su, a reputable Korean expert in teaching, consulting, and implementing communication and design projects to be Vice Dean of School of Media Design. Dr. Yi Dong Su has also won many Korean and international advertising awards. The fact that UEH University has foreign leaders in the organizational structure without precedent affirms UEH’s determination and breakthrough in Holistic education – Outstanding research, implementing the philosophy of “teaching what the world’s top schools are teaching and according to their own methods”.

Decision conferment for School of Media Design’s Board of Management

In order to strengthen the connection between training and research with the practice in the field of communication and design, UEH also signed a comprehensive MoU with the Southern Region Office, Vietnam News Agency. Accordingly, the two parties participate in exchanging and sharing resources for teaching training programs, implementing projects, events, and communication programs, etc. UEH students, especially those of Digital Communication and Multimedia Design will be able to participate in practical projects of Southern Region Office of Vietnam News Agency and approach modern equipments for learning and practical research.

UEH College of Technology and Design also signed MoU with Korean companies and corporations in the fields of green energy, technology and sustainable development, design and communication (AIIN, Nuriplan, UnisonHKR, Taelim Corp.). The parties will jointly conduct research and consult in the direction of multidisciplinary integration, link domestic and international research with new global contents associated with solving local problems, and transfer research results to the community with positive values and impacts.

Also in the series of related events from May 12 to May 14, leaders of UEH, UEH-CTD, Dr. Park Young June and a delegation of Korean experts and partners, along with domestic and foreign experts organized workshops on technology, design and communication; visited and worked with a number of large Vietnamese corporations to enhance domestic and foreign cooperations in the fields of technology, design, and communication.

The series of events “Transforming for Sustainability” has marked an important step for UEH in general and UEH College of Technology and Design in the implementation of strategic plans for the period 2021-2025, with a vision to 2030. UEH College of Technology and Design is not only developing the fields of technology and design, innovating for the sustainable development of society, but also inspiring arts to evoke action thinking for learners and the community.
