With its strategic orientation to become a “multidisciplinary, sustainable, and socially responsible university,” UEH has identified sustainability literacy as a core indicator reflecting students’ ability to understand, retain, and apply concepts, skills, and attitudes related to sustainable development. Since 2023, UEH has implemented periodic measurement plans to create a scientific foundation for evaluating educational impact and improving training programs for sustainable development, advancing toward the Net Zero 2050 goal and implementing the UEH Sustainable Development Strategy 2021–2030.

Measurement Methods and Tools

UEH has designed a sustainability literacy assessment toolkit based on the UNESCO ESD for 2030 competency framework and PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education), comprising three indicator groups:

+ Knowledge: Understanding of the 17 SDGs, sustainable development, green consumption, and the 3R model.

+ Skills: Ability to analyze and solve social-environmental problems, critical thinking and systems thinking.

+ Attitudes & Actions: Level of participation, green actions, and commitment to social responsibility.

Implementation method:

+ Format: Online and in-person surveys

+ Tools: 25-question questionnaire (multiple choice + simulated scenarios), 100-point scale, combined with gamified assessment through Green Campus Game.

+ Scope: All regular, transfer, and postgraduate students at campuses A, B, N (Ho Chi Minh City) and UEH Mekong (Vinh Long).

+ Frequency: Organized annually during Civic Engagement Week and comprehensive year-end surveys.

Measurement Results for 2023–2024UEH

Green Campus Game – sustainability awareness assessment model through experiential learning (September 2024)

Implemented from September 6–18, 2024, attracting 9,270 student participants with over 16,000 game plays.

Score distribution results:

+ 610 students achieved perfect scores (50/50)

+ 2,293 students scored 46–49 points

+ 2,932 students scored 42–45 points

+ 2,050 students scored 38–41 points

+ 1,385 students scored below 38 points

This represents a university-wide measurement dataset that clearly reflects UEHers’ literacy and green behavior. Questions in the game were designed to align closely with the UEH Green University Regulations (2024), covering topics including waste sorting, energy consumption, green transportation choices, and single-use plastic reduction – helping students learn while testing their understanding.

Picture1

Most commonly missed question: Why can’t we compost plastic? Answer: Because plastic is not biodegradable.

Picture2

Most well-understood question: To help students move conveniently between campuses and reduce carbon footprint from transportation, what has the university provided? Answer: UEH Shuttle Bus.

Green Campus Survey (December 2024)

+ Deployed university-wide in December 2024; the survey announcement was published on UEH Fanpage (deadline December 12, 2024), inviting all students, faculty, and staff to participate – demonstrating university-wide scope.

Picture3

+ According to the UEH Green Campus 2024 Report, 100% of survey participants indicated awareness of the Green University project; over 82% of students confirmed regularly practicing energy conservation and waste sorting behaviors; 76% actively participated in community environmental activities.

Living Lab – Integrated Learning and Assessment Model

+ UEH operates a Living Lab – Green Campus with five pillars (Training, Research, Governance, Operation, Community).

+ Data from the Living Lab dashboard is used as a learning and analysis tool in the “Sustainable Development” course, first applied to cohort K49 (2024).

Academic Measurement – Student Research 2024

+ In the UEH Student Scientific Research Festival, several projects measured sustainability behaviors and awareness using academic methods, notably: Project code 17A: “Factors Influencing Students’ Sustainability Behaviors at UEH University” – measuring student behavior and sustainability awareness using the SEM model, from the UEH School of Business. Summary Results and Trend Analysis (2023–2024)

Key Indicator 2023 2024 Trend
Students correctly answering ≥70% of SDG questions 72% 84% +12%
Students with regular green behaviors (waste sorting, energy conservation) 61% 76% +15%
Students applying sustainable thinking in research and projects 54% 69% +15%
Average literacy (UNESCO ESD scale, 1–5) 3.4 4.1 +0.7

Results show that UEH students not only understand but also transform awareness into action, providing clear evidence of sustainability literacy. Student groups participating in Green Campus Game and Living Lab scored 12–15% higher on average literacy than non-participating groups.

System Integration and Impact

+ UEH uses literacy results as strategic indicators in Sustainability Reports and training plans.

+ Survey and game datasets are stored on the UEH Green Campus Dashboard for year-over-year trend comparison, integrating data governance, training, and communication.

+ Results are fed back to each unit, helping instructors adjust teaching content toward “Learning to Act for Sustainability” (Learn – Act – Impact).

2025–2026 Plan

+ Standardize literacy toolkit according to UNESCO ESD 2030.

+ Expand survey to 100% of enrolled students (on UEH LMS platform).

+ Publish annual results in UEH Sustainable Development Report.

+ Link literacy scores with green practice data (energy, waste, community engagement).

+ Target by 2026: ≥80% of students achieve “Good” level, ≥30% achieve “Excellent” in literacy.

Compared to previous years, UEH’s activities this year not only maintain measurement of sustainability knowledge but elevate it to comprehensive sustainability literacy assessment – a more holistic indicator reflecting students’ ability to understand, apply, and transform sustainable knowledge into practical action. While last year UEH primarily focused on awareness surveys and educational games like Green Campus Game, this year the university has systematically deployed measurement tools, university-wide surveys, educational games, academic research, and integrated curriculum programs, comprehensively meeting the requirements of criterion 17.4.4 – “Measure the sustainability literacy of students.” This new approach demonstrates UEH’s shift from “understanding green” to “knowledge-based action for sustainability,” marking significant progress in the roadmap toward becoming a multidisciplinary and sustainable university, while affirming UEH’s pioneering role in education for a green future.

With its sustainable development strategy materialized through specific activities – from education and research to practice, UEH is building a green knowledge ecosystem where each student is not only a learner but also a creator of sustainable value for the future. Measuring sustainability literacy extends beyond numbers or tests; it serves as a measure of the transformation journey – from awareness to action, from learning to contribution. Through this, UEH continues affirming its pioneering role as an innovative and responsible university, where knowledge is nurtured to spread green impact, create difference, and build a sustainable development future for Vietnam and the world.
