1. Policy description
University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) enforces policies aimed at preventing and reducing marine pollution in all forms, particularly those originating from land-based activities.
The Regulations Regarding Green Campus Practice (Decision No. 2059/QD-DHKT-CSVC) sets out mandatory actions for waste management and the prevention of land-based pollution sources before they reach river systems and the ocean.
2. Core content of the policy (Implementation of Regulation 2059)
UEH’s policy focuses on preventing two main types of land-based pollution:
- Prevention of chemical pollution (from wastewater):
- Strengthening the implementation of Article 9, Clause 5: This is a key action to reduce chemical pollution. The regulation requires the Facilities Management Department to “Replace cleaning agents and materials with safe, organic, and environmentally friendly products,” directly preventing hazardous chemicals (a form of marine pollution) from land-based activities.
- Prevention of physical pollution (from solid waste, especially plastics):
- Strengthening the implementation of Article 3: Mandates the “Practice of waste segregation at UEH” to ensure that solid waste, particularly plastics, is managed at the source and does not leak into the environment.
- Strengthening the implementation of Article 6, Clause 5: Commits to the roadmap toward “Eliminating the use of plastic bags at UEH by 2025.”
- Strengthening the implementation of Article 12: Enforces strict control over single-use plastics at events, which are a major source of land-based waste.
3. Evidence of implemented programs
| No. | Program/Project | Summary | Image | Link | SDG Contribution | |
| 1 | Waste classification on UEH campus according to classification model 3, 7 | UEH has installed seven-bin waste separation systems in several spacious areas across the campus. In locations with more limited space, a three-bin waste sorting model is applied instead. This flexible waste classification approach helps maximize sorting efficiency, thereby minimizing environmental impacts. | Trash bin model 7 at UEH Campus B.

| 2 | Require units to use reusable glass bottles in seminars and workshops | Since early 2024, the UEH Sustainability Project Board has directed all faculties and institutes to comply with regulations on plastic waste management, particularly during major events. Specifically, the Board has required that 100% of events, conferences, and seminars organized by UEH use glass water bottles instead of plastic ones. In addition, for extended events, UEH has also prepared recyclable paper plates for tea-break sessions. | National Conference on “Contribution to Vietnam’s Socio-Economic Development Strategy for the Period 2025 – 2030” uses 100% glass bottles to store water.
